Die Gletscherlagune Jökulsarlon ist absolut einmalig, der Vatnajökulgletscher trifft dort auf und kleine & grosse Gletscherstücke, Gletscherberge- & brocken „kalben“ in einen 6 Kilometer grossen See bevor sie durch eine Fluss ins Meer gelanden. Ca. 2 Monate verbleiben die Gletscherberge in der Lagune bevor sie ins offene Meer driften, die Brandung – Ebbe & Flut – spült die Gletscherbrocken zudem für kurz Zeit wieder an den Strand zurück – der Black Diamond Beach bei der Lagune entsteht dadurch.
Wir hatten vor unserer Island-Reise ganz viele faszinierende Bilder von der Lagune und deren Umgebung gesehen, die Tour dorthin aber schweren Herzens von unserer Island-Trip Liste gestrichen, weil sie mit knapp 5 Stunden Fahrt von Reykjavik aus leider nicht gerade um die Ecke liegt.
Vanessa’s Vater hat uns dann überzeugt, er war im 2015 im Sommer in Island, dass wir doch unbedingt dorthin müssen und wir haben uns extra für eine Nacht in ein Hotel in der Nähe einquartiert (obwohl wir ein Ferienhaus für mehrere Wochen gemietet hatten) um die Tour zum Vatnajökull Gletscher unternehmen zu können und was sollen wir sagen? Über die Gletscher Lagune Jökulsarlon:
Die Jökulsarlon Gletscher Lagune ist eines der schönsten Naturwunder Islands und eine der beliebtesten Attraktionen für Reisende. Der See Jökulsárlón ([ˈjœːkʏlsaurˌlouːn], isländisch jökull, deutsch ‚Gletscher‘, á, deutsch ‚Fluss‘, lón, deutsch ‚Lagune‘, sprich „Gletscherflusslagune“) ist der bekannteste und größte einer Reihe von Gletscherseen in Island. Er liegt am Südrand des Vatnajökull auf dem Breiðamerkursandur zwischen dem Skaftafell-Nationalpark und Höfn. Mit 248 Metern ist er der tiefste See Islands.[1] Seine Fläche beträgt etwa 18 km².[2] Er liegt auf dem Gemeindegebiet von Hornafjörður.
Die Lagune begann sich im Jahr 1934 zu bilden, als der Gletscher sich in diesem Gebiet zurückzog. 1956 war die Lagune 4,5 Quadratkilometer groß und 1975 hatte die Lagune eine Größe von 8 Quadratkilometern erreicht. Heute wird die Größe der Lagune auf etwa 25 Quadratkilometer geschätzt und sie wird ständig größer, da jährlich rund 500 Quadratmeter Eis vom Gletscher abbrechen. Dies ist der perfekte Ort, um unberührte Natur und einzigartige Umgebung zu erleben, wo riesige Eisberge vom größten Gletscher Europas, dem großen Vatnajokull, abkalben und in allen Formen und Farben um die Lagune schweben. Jokulsarlon liegt im südöstlichen Teil Islands beim Vatnajokull. Es ist etwa 379 Kilometer östlich von Reykjavik und 78 Kilometer westlich des Dorfes Hofn. Die Lagune liegt entlang der großen Ringstraße, so dass es leicht zugänglich ist. Jokulsarlon ist ein Ort, den Sie nicht verpassen sollten, wenn Sie Island besuchen.
Der Jökulsárlón ist bekannt für die auf ihm treibenden Eisberge, die eine Höhe von bis zu 15 Meter erreichen. Sie lösten sich von der Gletscherzunge des Breiðamerkurjökull ab. Oft sind Farbunterschiede in den Eisbergen zu beobachten. Das Blau rührt von verschiedenen Kristallen im Eis und deren Reflexion her, das Schwarz von vulkanischer Asche. Am Ufer des Sees befinden sich zahlreiche Wanderwege. In den Monaten Juni und Juli nisten die Großen Raubmöwen (Skua) nahe dem Gletschersee. Weiterhin gibt es im Jökulsárlón Robben. In der Nähe befinden sich zwei weitere Gletscherseen, der viel kleinere und abgelegenere Fjallsárlón, mit kleineren Eisbergen, sowie der Breiðárlón.

Whoop whoop – there we take a photo in Iceland of a truck – more precisely from „the truck“ of the tour operator „Icelagoon Adventure Tours“ www.icelagoon.com at the glacier lagoon Jökulsarlon in South Iceland, from there the company operates and the Truck is their ticket office & reception desk for their boat tours on the glacier lake. We post the said photo on one of our Instagram accounts and promptly receive a request from the company asking to use our photo for marketing purposes. The glacier lagoon Jökulsarlon is absolutely unique, the Vatnajökulgletscher meets there and small and large pieces of glacier, glacier mountains and boulders „calve“ into a 6-kilometer lake before they landed by a river into the sea. Approximately 2 months remain the glacier mountains in the lagoon before they drift into the open sea, the surf – low tide & flood – rinsed the glaciers dry for a short time back to the beach – so the Black Diamond Beach by the lagoon is formed by them.
We had seen a lot of fascinating pictures of the lagoon and its surroundings before our trip to Iceland, but with a heavy heart we canceled the tour from our Iceland trip list, because it is less than 5 hours drive from Reykjavik and therefore not really around the corner .
Vanessa’s father convinced us, he has been to Iceland in the summer 2015, that we absolutely have to go there and we stayed at a nearby hotel for one night (although we had rented a holiday home for several weeks) and what can we say? About the Glacier Lagoon at Jökulsarlon:
The Jökulsarlon Glacier Lagoon is one of the most beautiful natural wonders of Iceland and one of the most popular attractions for travelers. The lake Jökulsárlón ([jœːkʏlsaurˌlouːn], icelandic jökull, German, glacier ‚, á, German, river‘, lón, German, lagoon ‚, meaning „glacier river lagoon“) is the most famous and largest of a number of glacial lakes in Iceland. It is located on the southern edge of Vatnajökull on the Breiðamerkursandur between the Skaftafell National Park and Höfn. At 248 meters, it is the deepest lake in Iceland. Its area is about 18 km ². It is located in the municipality of Hornafjörður. The lagoon began to form in 1934, when the glacier retreated into the area.
